Group `N` Saloons were on the same package as the GT`s        and some of the fastest Escort runners entered the lesser class A  to help make the numbers up. Charlie Cox winning the class after 4 race class wins. Pete Clarke , David Yates  , Jonathan Baker and Tony Lanfranchi also scored points. In 1994 Gary Ward ( RGS ) and Richard Piper had six top-6

( best finish 4th ) and Rudiger Schmitt ( 5th ) , PCAS for Ralf

Kelleners ( 9th ) and ITT Automotive for Berthold Bermel

The words Capri and V8 recall different cars to

different race fans depending where abouts in

the world you. The 70`s saw these muscle cars

pop up in the UK , Europe , US , South Africa and

Australia with engineers popping in Ford small

block V8s into the big selling coupe of the day.

In South Africa gifted engineer Basil Green built

a V8 Cortina and got backing from both Ford and

Gunston cigarettes in 1968. For 1970 his first

Capri V8 `Perana` was designated Z181 and used

so many Ford GT40 parts it was a genuine wolf in

sheeps clothing . His driver Bob Olthoff won 12 of

13 rounds of the 1970 SA Championship and could

reach 170 mph at Kyalami. It became a car of

huge interest and Green built some 560 road

Peranas with 280 BHP plus 6 race cars for his

team and customers for 1971. `With changes in

the rules to A2 ( more production-based ) in 1971

we wernt allowed to flare the bodywork more

than 2 inches. So I came up with the idea of

fitting C-shaped rear leaf springs that allowed

the fitting of the wide wheels within the

regulated bodywork`Green recalled in an article

for Octane Magazine in 2012. Oltoff retained the

title. The Peranas are fondly remembered in

South Africa and are a reminder of when the old

Kyalami circuit hosted both the 9-hour Sports

car races and the F1 Grand Prix.
