VWs pretty coupe was styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro ,
sold half a million units and close to my heart as I
owned one and was the car i brought my new born son
Rudiger Dahlhauser debuted the car April 1975 in the
DRM ( German GT ) at Hockenheim where despite
being one of the few 1600cc cars in the 2000cc class
and against the likes of Zakspeeds Escorts and the
BMW 2002s qualified 7th out of 33 first time out.
This set the tone for tuned Sciroccos to something of
a giant-killer in GT and particulary in the European
Touring Cars which , as Group 2 regs allowed for wide
wheel arches and front spoilers. Wolgang Wolff ran in
7 DRM rounds in 1977 in the Spiess Tuning car in the
cars busiest season which usually included the lesser
DARM GT series aswell.
In the States Milt Minter ran a white car for Bill
Scott in 5 Trans-Am rounds including the Watkins
Glen 6 hours ( a round of the World Championship ) and
the Sebring 12-hours ( round 1 of IMSA that year ).
It was in Touring Cars though that the car was a real
giantkiller. The Car won the 1600 class in 20 out of
23 races during 1977+78. Jorg Siegrist was the top
driver winning 5 with Anton Stocker in the Spiess car
then 8 with Willi Bergmeister in the orange
Jagermeister racing car. Six times a little scirocco
finished in the top 3 overall during those 2 seasons
and 22 times in top 7, proving the cars pace and its
reliability in these 4-hour events.
Just to complete the history the Belgian VW Club
entered Sciroccos in the Spa 24-hours race , then a
non-championship Group 1 event and had top 20 overall
finishes from 1977-80 with 2 class seconds. In the
1978 event the club boasted in one of their cars
superstar drivers Jacky Ickx and Brian Redman.
